As the title says, I'm looking for an artist, but not for myself. A good friend of mine is working on a fun, light-hearted web comic set in a very serious part of history (WWII era) and she's in need of a committed artist. I think the story is a wonderful mix of fun, quirky humor with a very serious/dark undertone and a cast of characters that would be all kinds of fun to design and illustrate, and I'm really hoping there's someone out there willing to help bring this story to life!

And now to hear from the writer herself:
My name is Sarah. I am a Written Arts and Literature student at Bard College intending to pursue comics professionally after I graduate (in 2 years.) My friend Naomi has been kind enough to post this advertisement for me, and I can't thank her enough, so here it goes:

I am looking to create a webcomic that would run for the next few years in order to actually start making comics, testing out my ideas, my format, and styles, before I start looking for work professionally. In short: I'm seeking an artist.

The comic is about a rag tag bunch of Nazi hunters (a Polish Jewish Girl, Nikola, an American soldier, Greg, a British soldier, Torvalt, a girl who worked in the French Resistance, Margot, and a defected Nazi, Kurt, called Klaus, who decided he was on the wrong side of the war because there were skulls on his uniform...and other less comical reasons. They're accompanied, guarded, and occasionally terrorized by Nikola's giant pet lion).

The plot would essentially emulate Joseph Cambell's "Hero's Journey;" it's very much a quest. The story is basically them journeying from France to Poland to save Nikola's older brother from the concentration camp he was taken to. They have an evil Nazi-officer big bad — sometimes referred to as Herr Evilface; he has villainous eyebrows.

The dynamic of the team and tone of the book is very Legend of Korra/Avatar meets Inglorious Basterds. (Though, my plot doesn't really borrow from either show or the movie — this won't be a fan comic.) There is a lot of humor, a few shenanigans, and a lot of bonding, but a very serious, dramatic plot, a lot of pain, blood, and a few people getting eating by a lion. (Only Nazi's get eaten by the lion.)

I have a lot more planned, but I wanted to see if anyone was interested first. I have sample scripts, character biographies, and a general outline, and a page-by-page breakdown of the first chapter.

I know this would be a lot of work for you, and it is a multi-year commitment, so please think carefully before you accept. If you accept, and I'd gladly give you 50% ownership of the comic. If you want to be paid, that's a little bit harder for me, but I'd be open to trying to work something out, though it's unlikely.

I'm so excited by this project, and I'm hoping to get someone else excited too! If you are, you can reach me at demonstrably.untrue@gmail.com or at my deviantART account: demonstrablyuntrue.

So I'm gonna go ahead and apologize for this bit of advertisement, but I'm vying to whatever social outlet I have because all my fingers are crossed right now.

Recently, I've been invited to join in on a hopeful, independent publishing group called Juxtaposed Publishing - it's trying to get off its feet right now, and we've just put up our Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to finance the publishing of five different, independent comic book stories and also be able to pay the creative teams working on each of them. Donations toward the Kickstarter program receive rewards that vary depending on how much is given - it goes anywhere from a free digital copy of a first issue of your choice, to a "walk-on" appearance in one of the comics themselves! 8D -hurpdurp sales pitch-

Anyway, while I would literally flail in my seat with joy if any donations were made, I'm mainly posting this to get the word out and hoping that my fellow deviantArtists will help spread the news as well.

I'm one of the artists on the team that's sitting around in my cave room hoping that this goes somewhere, but even then I'm just extremely stunned and happy that I even got this opportunity and that people actually entertain my crap ;u; <33

There are some really amazing stories and talents being put out on this group, so at the very least it's totally worth checking them out and sharing the love.

I recently came back from AWA (Anime Weekend Atlanta) up in Georgia, where I got to meet some awesome artists -cough plugs names cough kurkurkur and nNkComicRelief cough- and also mingle with fellow artists, both aspiring and professional, at various panels. One panel in particular was hosted by cartoonist/voice actor, Doug Smith, gave me a possibly interesting idea.

How would you, my watchers or anyone else who stumbles on this journal and gives a crap, like to see me host a kind of... online class thing? I'll do them on my Livestream, and enable it so you guys can hear me talk and explain the answers to any questions typed up in the chat box thing. These streams will most likely feature sketches and works based on whatever requests or questions had. For instance, having a problem drawing faces? I'll sketch/paint/whatever a face to explain. Need help with action poses? I'll do some of those.

Not to say that I'm a good enough artist to think everyone would benefit from hearing me blab, but I'm not going to pretend I know absolutely nothing about finding art solutions.

Just curious to see how many people would actually be interested in this. And, you know, listening to my stupid voice fail at explaining things. This is also a bit of practice for me - I want to one day teach art, so I of course need to be able to properly explain and approach these kinds of problems.

Anyway. -toddles off to her sickbed-

Yeah, I just realized that the time I use to do commissions should most likely be used working on things for my portfolio. I've got a couple paintings - acrylic, oil, watercolor - planned and lined up for me to do, and a few are rather large pieces. And when I say large, I mean one is like the size of the door. No, one IS the size of a door. Because I'm going to paint it ON a door. Doors are cheap and wood is good to paint on - just gotta prime it first.

Meanwhile, I'll also be attempting to make some digital pieces good enough to include in the Studio Art BFA review, simply for the fact that I want the reviewers to see what range in media I have (if you could call that range lulz). I REFUSE TO BE A STARVING ARTIST >8[ I WILL FIND WORK, DAMMIT. You don't have to work primarily out of galleries to be an artist, guys - there is nothing wrong with commercial work.

Anyway, I was curious - is there anything in my gallery currently (scraps, speedpaints, whatever you see) of digital work that you think would make for a good portfolio entry? Granted, I'll have to work on it a lot more to make it of the quality I want, because I doubt I have anything like that in my gallery right now.

I should be uploading a sketch dump or something soon. Been neglecting my deviantART, and my other blogs as well. Some photos/shots of my works in progress should be coming, too, I guess. Uuuhhh....

Have some Gogol Bordello www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G4VY2…

Peace out :star:
Naomi
