So I'm gonna go ahead and apologize for this bit of advertisement, but I'm vying to whatever social outlet I have because all my fingers are crossed right now.

Recently, I've been invited to join in on a hopeful, independent publishing group called Juxtaposed Publishing - it's trying to get off its feet right now, and we've just put up our Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to finance the publishing of five different, independent comic book stories and also be able to pay the creative teams working on each of them. Donations toward the Kickstarter program receive rewards that vary depending on how much is given - it goes anywhere from a free digital copy of a first issue of your choice, to a "walk-on" appearance in one of the comics themselves! 8D -hurpdurp sales pitch-

Anyway, while I would literally flail in my seat with joy if any donations were made, I'm mainly posting this to get the word out and hoping that my fellow deviantArtists will help spread the news as well.

I'm one of the artists on the team that's sitting around in my cave room hoping that this goes somewhere, but even then I'm just extremely stunned and happy that I even got this opportunity and that people actually entertain my crap ;u; <33

There are some really amazing stories and talents being put out on this group, so at the very least it's totally worth checking them out and sharing the love.

I just wanted to wish all of my watchers a very happy holiday season, no matter what you do or don't celebrate. Take the opportunity to enjoy what you have and be thankful for it. No matter which winter holiday you recognize, just enjoy your friends and family and the things that give you comfort and joy because they're not always going to be around.

Thank all of you for watching and commenting and faving my work, even when I haven't been on much. I'm grateful for the lot of you.

Be safe and be happy!
-Naomi

P.S. I'm posting more to my blogspot and tumblr, so if you have an account are care to take a peek, please do!

I recently came back from AWA (Anime Weekend Atlanta) up in Georgia, where I got to meet some awesome artists -cough plugs names cough kurkurkur and nNkComicRelief cough- and also mingle with fellow artists, both aspiring and professional, at various panels. One panel in particular was hosted by cartoonist/voice actor, Doug Smith, gave me a possibly interesting idea.

How would you, my watchers or anyone else who stumbles on this journal and gives a crap, like to see me host a kind of... online class thing? I'll do them on my Livestream, and enable it so you guys can hear me talk and explain the answers to any questions typed up in the chat box thing. These streams will most likely feature sketches and works based on whatever requests or questions had. For instance, having a problem drawing faces? I'll sketch/paint/whatever a face to explain. Need help with action poses? I'll do some of those.

Not to say that I'm a good enough artist to think everyone would benefit from hearing me blab, but I'm not going to pretend I know absolutely nothing about finding art solutions.

Just curious to see how many people would actually be interested in this. And, you know, listening to my stupid voice fail at explaining things. This is also a bit of practice for me - I want to one day teach art, so I of course need to be able to properly explain and approach these kinds of problems.

Anyway. -toddles off to her sickbed-

Yeah, I just realized that the time I use to do commissions should most likely be used working on things for my portfolio. I've got a couple paintings - acrylic, oil, watercolor - planned and lined up for me to do, and a few are rather large pieces. And when I say large, I mean one is like the size of the door. No, one IS the size of a door. Because I'm going to paint it ON a door. Doors are cheap and wood is good to paint on - just gotta prime it first.

Meanwhile, I'll also be attempting to make some digital pieces good enough to include in the Studio Art BFA review, simply for the fact that I want the reviewers to see what range in media I have (if you could call that range lulz). I REFUSE TO BE A STARVING ARTIST >8[ I WILL FIND WORK, DAMMIT. You don't have to work primarily out of galleries to be an artist, guys - there is nothing wrong with commercial work.

Anyway, I was curious - is there anything in my gallery currently (scraps, speedpaints, whatever you see) of digital work that you think would make for a good portfolio entry? Granted, I'll have to work on it a lot more to make it of the quality I want, because I doubt I have anything like that in my gallery right now.

I should be uploading a sketch dump or something soon. Been neglecting my deviantART, and my other blogs as well. Some photos/shots of my works in progress should be coming, too, I guess. Uuuhhh....

Have some Gogol Bordello www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G4VY2…

Peace out :star:

So, I some how forgot that traditional art is expensive as hell. At least oil paint is. And I am quite cheap, as my painting instructor likes to point out to me several times during class. BUT I have resolved to apply to the BFA studio art program this semester, which means I'm going to be working diligently to produce some quality pieces. I already have some in mind, all sketched out as thumbnails in my little red sketchbook - those I may post here, or up on my tumblr ( franq-art.tumblr.com/ ) whenever I get around to scanning them. I'm actually quite excited about some of these, and quite excited to use oil paint. I'm slightly addicted to it, even if I wish it dried a little faster sometimes.

So... yeah.... still doing $15 speedpaint portrait commissions, guys. << Not like it's for pocket change or whatever. BUT. I am thinking about doing some bribe commissions, though that's a horrible name for it. Send me a note with what you have in mind for the commission as well as what you have in mind for the price, and we can haggle something based on what you want. Just a portrait/bust? Ok, cool. Full body? That'll definitely cost more. I'm hesitant to state prices in case it'll scare anyway away, but I'm also not wanting to short-change myself. My time is very limited now that I'm working on this portfolio, and I would like to have some nice digital works to include with the added UMPH of it being commissioned work, i.e. a way for me to go "YEAH, SOMEONE PAID ME TO DO THIS. SUCK IT." or something

idk

So, yeah, I've been kinda terrible lately. No new art. Hit a huge block of motivation. I haven't even been SKETCHING properly. But this will most likely change - classes and work starts up again this coming Monday, the 29th, and though I only have one studio art class (a painting course), I have a feeling inspiration may hit again.

Here's hopin'.

I'm so remarkably happy, proud, and honored for AdamWithers and ComfortLove, two amazing and self-publishing comic book writers and artists. They've been nominated for two Harvey Awards - most Promising New Talent for Rainbow in the Dark, and Best Anthology for The Uniques Tales. I'm thrilled for them, because I know them to be wonderful people and amazingly talented and hard working. The voting for the awards ends this Saturday on the 6th, so if you have any experience in comics - writing, illustrating, published, self-published, or online - please head to the Harvey Awards website and download a ballot to cast your votes and send some support and love!

I've had the pleasure of working with Adam and Comfort, and participating in The Uniques Tales (past and future), so my prayers and good wishes are with them.

If you haven't already checked it out, please head on over to The Uniques site and give their amazing work a gander. It's tough self-publishing and making a living on it, and I have mad respect for such amazing creators achieving such an endeavor.

Since I can't do polls anymore, I'mma do a journal just cuz I can.

I'm thinking of doing a series of acrylic paintings for my portfolio (I have a few small ones that need scanning), and I was wondering. What's more satisfying to paint on for most traditional artists? Canvas, or some kind of board? Masonite, clayboard, cardboard - whatever.

Also, my commission slots are empty. 8D -fail advertisement, fails at life, fail fail fail-

Yep. I caved and made one, but only so I could help promote an X-Man roleplay site I'm on. I was like, "Balls, I have to make my own tumblr account to do this? Craaaap, fine, sure, I GUESS I'LL MAKE IT ABOUT ART AND STUFF, TOO." It'll also probably include random crap I reblog and just random shenanigans, whereas my blogspot is more specifically art, and then there's, you know... deviantART. Though, to be honest, I'm getting a bit jaded with dA. It's a great way to publicize yourself and get your work out there, but it's turning into a huge art-fart-people MySpace. That and I'm really getting tired of seeing shots of erect penises and jailbait clitoris all over the front page of dA.

Bunch of pervs.

Anyway, TUMBLR.
franq-art.tumblr.com/ <--- I have one. It's not much right now, as I don't have anything really posted yet... I have some stuff queued up to post while I'm away, though, because I know I'm gonna forget about it. I kinda really like the queue function on tumblr, not gonna lie. It's like the internet is saying, "Hey, lady, I know you're like a super lazy shit, so why don't you throw a bunch of stuff up on your queue and we'll post it for you over a period of time while you go dick around with your Pokemon game and other things that you shouldn't be doing." And then I'm saying, "COOL THX K BAI," then I go dick around with Pokemon and other things I shouldn't be doing.

You guys, I'm an awesome role-model. /lies

Details, price, and my paypal info can be found HERE - please keep in mind that these will be done between larger projects, but I can usually finish one of these guys up in one sitting. I'm not picky about the characters I paint, just as long as they're interesting. Please provide some key personality traits with the characters so I can paint them appropriately. No good painting a stern-faced tight-ass with a huge trollface smile, right?

There will be no waiting list - first come, first serve. Because I'm still tentative about this, I'm only opening up three slots at a time, so if they're full and you want one, better pounce when one frees up. The format for these portraits will probably vary depending on what I think looks good - some will have backgrounds, some just flat color, some will be cropped differently. It just depends on what I think is aesthetically most pleasing, so please don't be offended - I put the same amount of effort into all of them.

So, I can't figure out how to submit this onto dA (pardon my durp), so I put it up on youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCDIm2… <--- Right thur. I got a 23 out of 25 for it, and I was expecting to get lower honestly. It's choppy and rough and I don't think it's the best I could have done, but I'm just glad it's over with so I can stop losing sleep on it.

If anybody can tell me how to submit this animation (cuz it's not Flash, so I can't put it there), please let me know and I'll put it up on dA. Until then, it stays on Youtube.

So, I have an animation project in my class coming up pretty soon (as soon as we finish the InDesign work), and I already have in mind what I want to do. It'll be a thirty-second animation put to sound, a little music-box melody made for :devrinny-sega:'s story Rophlestein, featuring a child-version of the main character. I know what I want, but with only two/three weeks to work on it in between class work and work work, I'm not sure what the fastest/easiest method to go about doing it will be. I'll be animating using Photoshop CS3, and putting sound to it most likely with iMovie since that's what I have on my MacBook.

Any animators out there with some good words of advise and pearls of animating wisdom? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

In case my last two submissions haven't been a tip-off, I'm most likely going to be submitting more work created for classes. My Digital Foundations course - a requirement for my major - is a cram-course in only six weeks, so we get homework every night and a project at the end of the week. So, yeah - if I like it enough to submit, it will be up here. Right now, I'm taking a break from my current class project to update this journal. Likely, you'll get to see it later today once I finish it. I AM SO SLOW AT ILLUSTRATOR GUUUHH. I have but one more commission to finish and I'm gonna try to do just that once this project is finished, that way all I'll have to worry about then is class work, work-work, and portfolio work. I'm currently working on a historical fiction story that I'll be using as the theme of my portfolio, which means I'm gonna try and make traditional works on canvas displaying a mix of fantasy and historically-garbed figures. I'm kinda stoked - the main character is a former Teutonic Knight. X3 For all you Hetalia fans, that means he's a Prussian. XD

Anyway, my web-design class has got me making a WordPress account, which I'll be updating with some graphic designs, art work, and also web designs (durr) for the class. If you wanna check it out, please do so and give me some feed-back! naomifranq.wordpress.com/

Okies, well... that's it for now. -crawls off into her cave-

Oh, yeah, I forgot. I'm in college.

So, yeah - just a little update cuz I realize I suck so hard at remembering to update these things. Like, that Twitter account I started forever ago? Tooootally keep forgetting it exists. Like my Livejournal. I remember my blogspot, but I still suck at updating.

Anyway, been hella busy lately. A lot of my time and energy is being spent on school and work, though I won't have a job for this semester much longer. Stress, self-doubt, life, blah blah blah - all that junk wrapped up in a juicy burrito of indigestion and heartburn. Delicious. I'm still trying to come up with some decent digital works to include in my portfolio for my BFA, but I need to include traditional stuff as well. I've been gathering opinions about the portfolio process from fellow BFA applicants/students that are already in the program, and I already know I need to force myself outside of the box. Gonna try another super-sculpy creation in hopes to have some decent 3D works in my portfolio - tryin' to look diverse an' shit for the art snob faculty members.

I'm nervous because my style and the works I enjoy doing are nowhere near the usual stuff that gets into the program. My university is painfully limited in art programs - only Studio Art and Graphic Design as available majors - so I'm afraid if I put out concept art, character designs, and sequential pieces, that I'll be shot down like Dick Cheney's hunting partner. (Oh, yeah, political references ftw.) But, whatever, I don't want to get by doing something I hate, ya know? I think it's about time the university broadened its horizons, because the art world is expanding far beyond the "fine arts" field.

So, here are some words of advice for all you lovely artists who are not yet in college/going to be pursuing an art major: do what you do. Meaning, don't let people scare you into creating works that don't represent what you truly enjoy doing or what you want your career to be. Yeah, sometimes you're gonna get school assignments that are boring or that you hate, but those assignments are usually meant to strengthen your skills - our jobs as artists is to interpret those assignments and incorporate our individual style and technique into the lesson. They want you to draw/paint/whatever some architecture? Ok, cool - doesn't mean you gotta do a boring city-scape. Draw/paint the mutherfuckin' Sistine Chapel, but if you like to draw comic book scenes or people or animals and creatures, then put a fuckin' DRAGON in the background, draw some people in the foreground, stick some caped crusader on top of the building and make it a badass night scene. Hey, they didn't say you COULDN'T do that, did they? No - they just said you had to include architecture. Ohey, look, you did! You just happened to put some cool shit in the background. Oops.

Bless you all,

What is this I don't even....

U P D A T E S

After hardly being active on here with any real work of consequence, I come back to update and discover this new journal thingy that everyone's been bitching about. What is this I don't even... Ok, I guess I can see why it was done, but I miss the old way. Oh well. Things change. People can adapt and change with it, or get stuck and go nowhere by bitching and moaning.

Anyway, back to the point of this journal.

I am being booted away from the world of digital painting and into the world of traditional. You know, with real paint, that doesn't give as easily as digital. Real paint, that springs up and surprises you when the colors you try to blend on the canvas suddenly look like doodoo. Real paint that drips in uncontrollable fashions down your piece when you've added too much water into the mix. Real paint that costs a lot of money, and real canvases that also cost a lot of money. My wallet is crying.

That being said, I'm learning a lot and I'm not sorry for a single choice I've made. Except for maybe not getting into these classes sooner. I'm in a workshop portrait/figure painting class, that's like 5-6 hours long once a week. I'm in a class full of amazing painters who are all practically already in the BFA program, trying out for it, or getting their amazing skills reviewed. Some are even going for MFAs. And here I am, having somehow gotten into this advanced class without having taken the Painting 1 pre-requisite, learning by all of my numerous, numerous mistakes. I feel like such a newblet. I tell you what, this class has been extremely, extremely humbling and goes to show that what i know - what I've been ego-tripped into believing was a great skill/understanding - amounts to a whole lot of nothing. It's almost embarrassing when my class mates ask me questions and I have no clue what they're talking about - most of what I say in that class turns out to be laughable at best. I'm embarrassed by my lack of knowledge and my new-born-giraffe grace in handling the medium. I've jumped right into the deep end and I need to learn to swim fast. (Ironically enough, I can't actually swim worth crap - but I can float like a beast, man. Count on my corpse to be the first to rise to the water's surface.) Once I find some batteries for my camera, I'm going to be photographing my class work. Some of which I'll post up here on dA, the rest of which will find their way onto my blogspot where I put most (if not all) my future works-in-progresses and sketches.

To all those who have commissioned me and are still waiting for their commissions, I am profusely apologetic for how long I'm taking. It's been hard for me to bring up any focus on anything that's not related to school and life at the moment. I get home every day and immediately just want to sleep. Yeah, I know - QQ some more, Nao, geez, shut up and do your job. Keep up your astounding, remarkable, saint-like, and miraculous patience, my dear commissioners, because I won't let you down. I have so much love and respect for every one of you, and for all my watchers/fav-ers, like you have no idea.

:star:

Here's to a future of happiness and success for one and all,
Naomi

SO remember my last journal where I was freaking out about tuition?
I think God's given me a reprieve from my bad fortune lately, because I not only got a grant from the university, but I also managed to land a work-study job. I was so happy I almost cried. No joke. OTL;;;
But, yeah. Between my new job (it's only five hours in the mornings, twice a week), my ridiculously long classes (three studio art classes, two are like three hours long and another is from 9 in the AM to 3:20 in the PM), I'm discovering what little time I have left to myself. x.x Most of the week, I'm on campus for either school or work all day, sometimes not getting home until very late, and then I just want to sleep if I don't have to work on school work.
I feel like I've done this routine before for some reason XD
Anyway, I'm still contemplating the CG portrait commission idea, though now putting more into consideration the amount of time I have to actually work on them. I'll make a decision once I finish the commission load I have now.
Until then....
ENJOY as I spam you all with school work! =D

U P D A T E S

SO it's that time of year again. Papers are being filled, schedules are being made, and hair is being ripped from my scalp as I stress about tuition again. This time a lot more, though. Who new a four-year university would be a lot more expensive than a community college? </sarcasm> Anyway. I'm taking three art classes and another art history class. A lot of my time will end up being spent on campus, but I may have to drop a class. My current scholarship won't pay for all of it and I may have to take out a lone, if I don't get this workstudy opportunity I want or can't get a grant.

So, yeah. I'm really feeling the financial crunch right now. WHICH MEANS. I'm thinking about opening up some more pricey digital commissions. No full-body, as that takes too much time. I'm thinking digital portraits like these:
Street Life by No-Nami Despondent Dead by No-Nami
Only a little more experimental, as I'm trying to develop some more painting techniques.
EDIT: I just noticed they're both facing in the same direction... among other similar things... Goddamn, I need to fix that DX TIME FOR NEW ANGLES, NAO, GAWL. -fails at life-

Then, as a less-expensive option, maybe something like these?
Paint sketch portraits by No-Nami

I dunno. I'm just really strapped for cash and a lot of people probably are, so this is probably the worst time to try this, but hell. Gotta try at least. DX Anyone think this offer would pitch well? I wanna check and see if anyone is even interested before I bother opening it up.

Love and Peace,
Naomi

BACK FROM DISNEY. Actually got back last night, but I only just now finished catching up with my BAJILLIONS of updates in my inbox. OTL Anyway, yeah. It was fun, and as soon as I get batteries for my camera, I'll be uploading a butt-ton of pictures, some of which you'll be able to see on my photography account - :iconmega-pickles: It was a lot of fun, along with some frustration and grievances (that's what happens when you travel with the brother you always end up arguing with), not to mention I lost one of my favorite rings in the process. .__. It was FREEZING COLD, though, and SUPER WINDY. x.x There were icicles - I shit you not, ICICLES in ORLANDO - hanging off of some of the trees in the park. REAL ONES. Not Disney props. It apparently SNOWED here in Tallahassee while I was gone. Wtf, mang. Global warming my ass.

Anywho, because I'm an idjut and didn't think to check ahead for weather reports, I didn't really bring proper winter gear. I just had a goody, some jeans, my sneakers, and a bunch of short-sleeved T-shirts. I managed to buy some gloves, but still. Not surprisingly, I got a cold. DX I was coughing like mad the entire trip there, as I probably wasn't completely recovered from my last sickness, but now I've got some awesome congestion and sinus crap. Coughing up nasty stuff and practically DRAINING out of my nose. Yeah. Ew.

OTL

But, yeah. I didn't get much sketching done at the hotel, as I did more sleeping than anything. I've been a bad person and just doodling digitally as I can lay in my bed with my laptop and tablet instead of sitting upright at my desk to work on pen commissions. =A=;;; I'm horrible. I know. DX I apologize profusely <333

Anywho. I'll be working towards those commission completions before I contemplate opening up sketch-paint digital portraits....
